Summary:
  • Continued my consumer electronics design experience while gaining startup and optics experience.
  • This fast-paced startup was founded to bring a high-volume consumer-grade virtual reality headset to the  for PC gaming and entertainment markets.
  • The company did not survive the tech bubble.
Major Accomplishments:
  • Enabled quick directional decisions by management by rapid turn-around design and build of several new virtual reality headset concepts and technical demonstration models.
  • Collaborated with industrial designers, electronic engineers, and other stakeholders to develop an acceptable and manufacturable headset concept.
  • Performed mechanical design in Pro/Engineer of the headset and all its various components.
  • Produced all necessary documentation for custom plastic parts and performed revision control.
  • Managed the molder and toolmakers throughout the tool design/build/trial process.
  • Collaborated with Polaroid Corp to develop manufacturable optics.
  • Worked intensely to move from start of detailed design to first-shot plastics within 4 months.
  • Debugged and corrected a major user acceptance problem caused by the lack of a counterbalancing force which caused the initial design to sag from its optimal position in front of the eyes.
Relevant Expertise:
  • Pro/Engineer solid modeling
  • Rapid prototyping (SLA system in house)
  • Injection molding
  • Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA)
  • Optics packaging
  • Electronics packaging and interconnection
